UN Official graced Asia Pacific NGO Forum

Dr. Noeleen Heyzer , the United Nations Undersecretary General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) was the guest of honor and keynote speaker at the recently concluded Asia Pacific NGO Forum on Beijing + 15 held on October 22-24, 2009 at Miriam College in Quezon City.

Nearly 15 years after the Beijing Conference, the APNGO Forum brought together more than 500 international delegates who reaffirmed the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA), a strategic document to ensure that the rights of women are protected, promoted, and fulfilled. During the forum, the delegates also made a Final Declaration on Beijing + 15 entitled Weaving Wisdom, Confronting Crises, Forging the Future.

Dr. Heyzer is the first woman to hold the highest UN post in Asia. Prior to her appointment as Undersecretary General, she was the Executive Director of United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) in New York.

The Forum was convened by Dr. Patricia B. Licuanan, chair of the Southeast Asia Women’s Watch and President of Miriam College.
