InfoSec Conference 2010

Digital Filipino Club and Posh Marketing Services brought out to Filipinos a forum that generally shared and educated protective ways on how to secure environment against the radioactive internet usage. This was entitled InfoSec Conference 2010 that gathered top practitioners who shared their best practices on Information and Technology security at the Intercontinental Hotel, Makati City last August 25, 2010.

First National Zoological Conference

The First National Zoological Conference was held last August 23 to 24, 2010 at the Bulwagang Buhay-llang, Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center Quezon Avenue, Quezon City. The two-day event was organized by the PhilZoos Association together with the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB). Its theme is “Zoological Parks: Moving Towards the 21st Century.

PhilZoos is an organization of zoo owners and operators to share notable insights and invaluable knowledge that will revolve on three-pronged” objectives: Promotion of responsible zoological park operations, enhancing awareness of zoological park owners/managers/staff on existing policies and other basic considerations in zoological park establishment and operation; orientation about PhilZoos and to obtain the latter’s support on the agency’s endeavors.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) can promote the country as a must-see destination for foreign tourists not only because of its world-class beaches and resorts, historical and cultural landmarks, world-class products and goods, beautiful sceneries but also zoos where they can view birds and animals in the Philippines.

The Philippines has also rare birds and animals tourists must see because they are now becoming extinct with the loss of their national habitat. These are the tamaraw in Mindoro, the pilandok or Philippine mouse deer, the smallest hoofed animal found only on Balabas Island, Palawan, the kagwang, a unique animal in the wilderness of Bohol, Leyte, Samar, Basilan and some parts of Mindanao, kooka, the largest of flying squirrels found in the Philippines, the malmag, one of the smallest primates in the world, the deer found in the forests of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, the tandikan or peacock pheasant, found only in the forests of Palawan, the dalud or imperial pigeon found in the forest bird, and the kalangay, the Philippine cockatoo now restricted in Palawan.

Philippine Orchid Society 64th Anniversary flourishes with its Mid-Year Orchid Garden Show

The Philippine Orchid Society (POS), country’s premier orchid club, held its Mid-Year Orchid and Garden Show in line with their 64th Anniversary at the Manila Seedling Bank compound in QC last August 13 to 23, 2010.

Dubbed with the theme “Protecting Our Orchids from Climate Change”, the show focused on the conservation and protection of our Philippine orchid species. It also featured the best orchid blooms of the season set in landscaped exhibits executed by the country’s top orchid collectors and landscapers.

Aside from exhibits, free lectures on orchid growing and gardening were also held for the visiting public. Cebu Franchise Exhibit

First Campomanes Memorial chess inaugural

Another leap to the success of Philippine chess history was taken as the first Florencio Campomanes Memorial chess championship slated August 28 to September 3 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

First Philippine Hotel Investment Conference

The Ninth Coconut Festival

The Philippines is one of the leading exporters of coconut in the world. And to continue on promoting and improving this industry, the Ninth Coconut Festival kicked off last Aug. 12-15 at the SM Megatrade Hall at the SM Megamall.

"The best coconut products were presented in the trade fair and exhibits, which was also a celebration and a tribute of honor and thanksgiving for the blessings and benefits derived from the industry to establish a continuing awareness of its [coconut] lasting importance to our national life," said Mr. Oscar G. Garin, president of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA).

The celebration was mandated by Presidential Proclamation No. 142, Series of 1987, issued by former President Corazon C. Aquino.

The theme "Niyog "Yaman ng Pinoy" highlighted the national magnitude and of the coconut and its industry as one of the major sources of millions of Filipinos" livelihood and sustenance.

The PCA Central Office and regional and provincial offices spearheaded the event that further promoted the coconut as the "Tree of Life," the multitude of products that can be derived from it. The festival also provided a venue for information sharing and trading activities, and lectures and demonstrations on the latest coconut technologies.

2010 FUTSAL Championships

A total of 24 teams from various colleges and clubs clashed for the 2010 Futsal Championships held around Club 650 in Eastwood, Pasig last August 14 to 15, 2010.

According to Farita Villanueva of Creative Lab Inc., the tournament organizer, the sport of futsal is slowly gaining popularity in the country, drawing a boost with the recently concluded FIFA World Cup held in South Africa.

Futsal is a variant of football that is played on a smaller playing surface. This indoor game is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football. The rules make room for improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

The two-day competition involved 12 teams each in the men's and women's divisions.

Fourth Mommy Milkshake Marathon

Breastfeeding is one of the most rewarding experiences for a mother – not only does it ensure the proper nutrition for babies, it also serves as an emotional “bonding” moment for the mother and her child, forging a connection between them.

With all sorts of different “runs for a cause” popping up, Mommy Mundo decided to kick off the breastfeeding month of August with the Fourth Mommy Milkshake Marathon last Aug. 8 at the Bonifacio Global City. The day-long event had two different divisions, the 3K and the 5K run, and served as a “fun and relaxed run with [your] family and kids.”

The marathon encouraged the support and promotion of breastfeeding in the country as an activity that promotes health and beauty for the mother and child, an affordable and accessible, not to mention environmentally friendly, way of feeding babies.

The Fourth Mommy Milkshake Marathon was presented by Mommy Mundo, the Philippine Association of Childbirth Education (PACE), and GlaxoSmithKline, supported by Mommy Matters, Havaianas, RCBC Savings Bank, Richwell Corporation, Big & Small Co., and Bonifacio Global City. 7-Eleven Tour 500

In celebration of the opening of their 500th store, 7-Eleven gave back its success to the Filipino community, who has remained faithful and staunch customers since the launch of its first store in 1984, through a special biking tour named the 7-Eleven Tour 500. The tour was held at the 7-Eleven Market Drive in Filinvest Corporation, Alabang last August 8, 2010.

This inspiring advocacy was created to provide a safe and fun venue for biking enthusiasts of all ages (experienced and non-experienced bikers alike) to enjoy the world through two wheels, while helping those in need and the less fortunate by giving back to chosen charities.

Open to all biking enthusiasts who want to enjoy the thrills of riding in a safe environment while helping your chosen charities, the 7-Eleven Tour 500 will commence on August 8, 2010 at 7:30am at the 7. The event was joined by various biking enthusiasts who want to complete their first 60km ride in serene and supportive surroundings, as well as those who wish to test themselves in a competitive environment. The first 37km of the route took riders through Daang Hari, Molino Drive, Paliparan Road and Governor's Drive. There were also choices to turn into Amadeo Road or finish at the Tagaytay Convention Center.

The first placer got P25,000 donated to a charity or NGO of his choice, while the second and third placers got P10,000 and P5,000 donated to their chosen charities, respectively. Proceeds from the biking tour will also go to Bantay Bata.

Ms. Irish Valenzuela, a 24-year-old pride of Asingan, Pangasinan took top honors in the 90.4- km. race from Alabang, Muntinlupa in a time of three hours, 18 minutes and 16 seconds.

Run for Humanity

Philippine Red Cross hosted the 2010 Run for Humanity, with the theme “Geneva Convention: Compassion Amidst Armed Conflict”. The event was held last August 15, 2010 at the Pres. Disodado Macapagal Blvd., Pasay City and it started at around 5’o’clock in the morning.

The cause was put up in celebration for the International Humanitarian Law Month.  This year it was designated to the Red Cross Pasay Chapter. The charity event encourages locals to run in order to help the organization that has been at the forefront of providing medical assistance throughout the world. The categories for the run include 3k, 5k, and 10k.  Registration fees amount to 250, 300, 350 for 3k, 5k and 10k respectively. The registration fee includes Singlet, Route Map and Race Bib. The event was made possible by the hundreds of participants who joined and the sponsors; Pocari Sweat, Philippine Star and LAE.

OSHDP 1st National Convention

The Organization of Socialized Housing Developers of the Philippines (OSHDP) held their first ever National Convention last August 19-20, 2010 at the Grand Men Seng Hotel, Davao City.

Organization of Socialized Housing Developers of the Philippines  (OSHDP) is , an assembly of private developers and allied interests nationwide involved in the development of socialized and low-costing housing, spearheaded by their president, Ms. Linda A. Tan bear their advocacies on boosting the momentum and gains that housing sectors has achieved in pump-priming the economy. Thus, the theme “Sulong Pabahay, Ginhawang Buhay”, A Stronger  OSHD-Government Partnership on Leaping Forward Through Socialized Housing. WEAP 5th Annual Convention

The Water Environment Association of the Philippines (WEAP) Inc., a member of the association of the Water Environment Federation (WEF) of the United States held its 5th Annual Convention last August 5 and 6, 2010 at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino Lahug, Cebu City.

This year’s theme is “Climate Change: Act Now for Future Generations.” Andrew T. Montalbo and Artemio F. Baylosis, WEAP president and president-elect respectively, welcomed delegates and the representatives from the various water districts, private companies, LGUs, manufacturers, environmental practitioners and pollution control officers that attended the event.

APO’s 7th Biennial Congress and 30th Anniversary

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the Association of Philippine Orthodontists (APO) held its Seventh Biennial National Orthodontic Congress at The Hotel Intercontinental Manila in Makati City last August 2 and 3, 2010. The event’s chosen theme was “Orthodontics in a Challenging World: Making All Things Possible.”

“Despite the continued evolution and progress in Orthodontics in the new millennium, the modern day orthodontist is still often confronted with various challenges,” APO President-Elect and congress chairman Dr. Roberto Tan said.

In an attempt to address these challenges, three world renowned orthodontists graced the event as the congress speakers: Dr. Peter Ngan, professor and chairman of the West Virginia University, Department of Orthodontics and Awardee of the 2007 American Association of Orthodontists Jacob Salzmann Memorial Lecture, and Dr. Stephen Wei, president of the Hong Kong Society of Pediatric Dentistry and professor Emeritus of the University of Hong Kong.

Their conjoint lecture covered the topic: “Early Orthodontic Treatment.” The congress will also feature Dr. Chris Chang, a much sought after and world renowned speaker, an orthodontic practitioner based in Taiwan who obtained his Certificate in Orthodontics and PhD in Bone Physiology from Indiana University, USA. He discussed the topic: “Management of Impacted Canines and Excellent and Efficient Finishing.”

These three speakers along with their lecture topics were carefully chosen to guarantee clinical relevance in the management of difficult orthodontic cases.

Another highlight of the congress was the induction of new officers and members of APO and Philippine Board of Orthodontics (PBO) as well as the Investiture of new Diplomates of the Philippine Board of Orthodontics in a formal ceremony. Convocation guest speaker was Antonio Adriano, Commissioner of the Professional Regulation Commission.

The APO is the national orthodontic association affiliated with the Philippine Dental Association (PDA). Since 1995, the APO has been recognized as an Affiliate Member of the prestigious World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO), a global orthodontic organization comprising 108 nations. The APO is a Charter Member of the Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society, which is composed of 16 countries regionally.

Right Degree: The 2010 College Conference and Exhibit

Organization of Socialized Housing Developers of the Philippines First National Convention

One of the major concerns in the country nowadays is how to provide low-cost quality housing the growing population.

A group of private developers gathered to form the Organization of Socialized Housing Developers of the Philippines (OSHDP), to consolidate efforts in the development of socialized and low-cost housing. Through the years, the OSHDP has already gained recognition from both the government and private sectors for successfully carrying out its advocacies.

Last Aug. 19 and 20, the OSHDP held its first ever national convention at the Grand Men Seng Hotel in Davao City. Carried by the theme "Sulong Pabahay, Ginhawang Buhay," the convention sought to build a stronger OSHDP-government partnership in leaping forward thorough socialized housing.

The two-day convention was also meant to serve as an avenue for new government officials to share their views and policies and programs regarding the sustainability of the real estate and housing sector.

The event, which also coincided with the week-long Kadayawan Festival, drew out major stakeholders in the housing industry, professionals, and other invited delegates. President Benigno Aquino III was invited as an honored guest. Dennis Molina, public information officer of OSHDP Davao, said Vice President Jejomar Binay, head of the Housing Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC), better known as PAG-IBIG, also graced the convention.

7th Vegetables Congress in Mindanao

Consolidation and marketing opportunities in the domestic Vegetable trade were highlighted at the 7th Mindanao Vegetable Congress held at the Almont Hotel and Inland Resort, Butuan City last August 4 to 5, 2010.

“Sustaining the gains of the vegetable industry in Mindanao amidst challenges” was the theme of this year’s Congress, that showcased industry trends, provided presentations on the latest vegetable production technologies, and held “market-matching” meetings between growers and retail and institutional buyers.

The event is supported by the city government of Butuan, the provincial governments of Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur, the Department of Agriculture, the Southern Philippine Vegetable Council (SPVC), and USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program.

“This annual event has given a boost to vegetable growers in Mindanao,” said Valeriano Palco, president of the Caraga High-Value Cluster, Inc. (CHiVeCC), lead organizer of this year’s congress.

CHiVeCC is among several vegetable industry groups engaging in private sector – private sector collaboration to improve the production and domestic out-shipment of selected vegetable varieties from the region to Luzon and the Visayas, with GEM assistance.

19th National Retail Conference and the Stores Asia Expo set on SMX Convention Center
