With the theme “Cutting Edge Ophthalmology: Best from Europe,” the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology (PAO) held its Annual Convention at the SMX Convention Center last November 25 - 28, 2009.
The meeting offered the opportunity to learn new skills in Instructional Courses that have immediate impact on various aspects of clinical practice. The trade exhibits that ran simultaneously with the convention featured the latest ophthalmic products and services, medical and operating room equipment and supplies, pharmaceuticals, and publications related to Ophthalmology.
The Socials program included in the Full Program Registration entitled the delegates to attend the Welcome Cocktails and the Fellowship Dinner to mingle with the Speakers, Colleagues, and Industry Partners in a festive and informal atmosphere at the end of the day.
PAO President Reynaldo E. Santos, MD, also Honorary Chair of the Committee on Continuing Education in Ophthalmology, delivered the President’s Message during the Opening Ceremonies. It was followed by the presentation of the New Diplomate Members of the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology by Cosme Ildefonso N. Naval, MD, Chairman of the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology.

During the 2nd day of the conference, Dr. Mario J. Valenton, Jr. from the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) delivered a special lecture called the “Jose Rizal Memorial Lecture. His lecture was on “Cornea and External Eye Diseases in the Philippines.”
Election of the PAO Officers for year 2010-2011 took place on the 2nd and 3rd day of the convention.
Aside from the Induction of New PAO Members & Conferment of Fellowship and Proclamation & Oath Taking of the newly PAO Executive Council for the year 2010-2011 during the closing ceremonies, a fellowship night was held on the last night of the convention. The inter-hospital contest entitled “Ophthalmology's Got Talent” highlighted different talents from the different hospitals. The awarding of winners for the contest and other PAO Sports Activities immediately followed.
