International Conference on the Galleon and Making of the Pacific Sets Sail in Intramuros

The Intramuros Administration conducted the International Conference on the galleon and Making of the Pacific last Nov. 9–11 at the Villa Imaculada, Gen. Luna and Anda Sts. in Intramuros, Manila.

The three-day gathering saw to the participation of scholars from Spain, the People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, the United States, Mexico, and the Philippines, who looked into the context and infrastructure of the galleon trade, how if affected the regional trade in Asia and the Americas, and the future prospects of cultural transformation brought about by the galleon trade.

Speakers for the conference included economic historian Dr. Benito Legarda; Dr. Gusli Asnan of Indonesia’s Ministry of Museum and Antiquities; Mr. Javier Ruescas and Mr. Javier of Associacion Cultural Galleon de Manila-Madrid; Dr. William Summers, professor of Musicology at the Dartmouth College; Dr. Wu Jie Wie of the University of Beijing; architect Jorge Loyzaga of Mexico; architect Francisco Pol, who is also a professor in the University of Alcala and recipient of the Premio National de Urbanismo; and Dr. Carlos Lles Loza, an urban sociologist from the Universidad Carlos III.
