Lanuza Surfing Festival 2009

Lanuza, Surigao del Sur is noted as one of the world’s great surfing destinations. This rural, but elegant little town facing the Pacific Ocean, has endless waves ideal for surfing and other water sports activities. The site is known as Doot Poktoy, a huge sand bar across the town’s seawall with waves that can go up to 10 feet comparable with Cloud 9 in Siargao.

In these spectacular waves set the 2009 Lanuza Surfing Festival Celebration last November 17 to 20, 2009, joined by local surfers from La Union, Baler, Siargao, Lanuza, Samar, Davao, Zambales, Surigao, Catanduanes and Tandag, as well as international participants from Israel, Japan and Australia.

There were three types of competition: First International Surfing Open; Fifth International Longboard Invitational, Sixth Wahine Surfing Open for women and Seventh National Surfing Open.

In the evening the next day, the first “Dyosa ng Lanuza ‘09” pageant was held which showcased ELRO Ipanema footwear with Rene Salud’s Filipiniana Collection and Agsam fashion accessories (made locally by Lanuzanons). The said beauty pageant theme gave emphasis on environmental protection and conservation appealed well to the audience.

Far from the normal Lanuza Surfing Festival, this year is more than waves and surfs because it also showcased awareness and care for our environment.
