A Celebration of Commitment to Professionalism in Real Estate

Real estate developers and properties have been sprouting in the metropolis, and even in the fast-developing provinces, in the recent years. Real estate brokers, in their quest to promote their company and generate income, may then be tempted to resort to unprofessional methods in order to lure buyers.

This is what the Real Estate Brokers Association of the Philippines (REBAP) is trying to prevent within its ranks as it celebrates its 31st year. Their theme, “A Commitment to Professionalism” was geared in instilling and uplifting the professional standards of real estate brokers.

Held at the Taal Vista Hotel at Tagaytay City last November 26–28, the convention also served as a venue for the election of officers and directors of REBAP.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Governor (at the time) Ayong Maliksi of Cavite were among those who gave messages for REBAP for the convention. It is to be noted that Cavite arguably the premier province for real estate development, home to hundreds of different subdivisions and low-cost housing options.

Ms. Evangeline Yia, Chairman of the Board of REBAP, said that the passage of the Real estate Service Act (RESA) 9646 calls for a celebration of a milestone after 20 years of their crusade. Ms. Yia also emphasized the Filipino real estates practitioners’ abilities and professional values to be at par with the international standards.

Philippine Halal Industry Received Boost at 2009 Mindanao Halal Forum

Mindanao’s halal industry got another boost from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Region 12 as it staged the 2009 Mindanao Halal Forum held last November 23 -24, 2009 at the Rizal Ballroom of Makati Shangri-la Hotel in Makati City.

Carrying the theme, “Enhancing Halal Science and Technology for Economic Growth and Social Equity”, the Forum aims to increase the level of awareness of Halal stakeholders from the government, industry/ private sector on the contemporary global Halal industry; identify and disclose challenges and problems within the Halal supply and value chain; and, explore and generate trends and opportunities in the Halal Industry primarily thru Halal Science and Technology for economic growth and social equity.

Halal may be food or non-food items permissible in Islam.

According DOST regional director Dr. Haja Sittie Shayma Zenaida Hadji Raof-Laidan, there are an estimated two billion Muslim consumers abroad, but non-Muslims can also be tapped since Islam does not bar them from consuming the halal products. She estimated the global halal market value at not less than $600 billion.

She added that the Philippines has barely captured 1% of the Halal market worldwide. While there were Halal-certified products in the Philippines, the main problem was the absence of a Halal forensic laboratory, so the Muslim authorities could confirm the integrity of the product. Dr. Laidan revealed the Philippines Department of Science and Technology will be constructing a laboratory for Halal certification to address the issue.
