The 1st World Creative Youth Forum 2009 was themed as “One Life One Earth,” aimed at empowering the youth action and participation towards sustainable development.
The event was held at the University of the Philippines-National College of Public Administration and Governance (UP-NCPAG) and Expo-Centro, Cubao on May 5-10, 2009.
The event was in promotion of the worldwide advocacy by the United Nation’s Decade of Education for Sustainable Development for 2005-2014.
Sub-themes of the 1st Creative Youth Forum (WCYF) 2009 were Peace andHuman Rights, Climate Change, Sustainable Lifestyle, Social Entrepreneurship and Ethical Living & Technology.
The forum highlighted the importance of development through conflict resolution from a global context down to the family. The event aimed on educating the youth to produce solutions to the alarming global situation regarding peace, poverty, environment, health, and natural catastrophies.
About 200 individuals from 180 organizations worldwide participated the forum. Coutries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Costa Rica, Australia, Japan, Korea, Canada, Kenya and the Philippines, among others, got involved in the first world youth forum.
The event was made possible by Brotherhood of Destiny (BROOD), UNESCO, Children of the Earth and other organizing partners.

Philippines Votes Earth during First Global Election
Last March 28, 2009, over 15 million Filipinos from 647 cities and towns nationwide voted in darkness. Instead of fear, Filipinos rejoiced in darkness as they participate in the ‘first global election’ between Earth and global warming. And it was evident who won – planet Earth.
The Philippines was one with over 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries, hundreds of millions of people have “voted Earth” in the world’s largest demonstration of public concern about climate change during Earth Hour 2009. For one hour, each of the 88 countries worldwide turned off their light to signify their desire to save Earth and combat global warming.
Here in the Philippines, Department of Energy (DOE), World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Philippines, Green Army Network, and SWITCH Movement led the archipelago in the historical event.
Gary Valenciano, Lea Salonga and the Bayanihan Dance Troupe entertained the crowd who witnessed the ceremonial shutdown led by DOE Secretary Angelo Reyes held at the SM Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City.
According to WWF-Philippines, in an article posted in their website, the Philippines edged out all other countries for the most number of participating cities and towns, 647, followed by Greece with 484 and Australia with 309 - proving that Filipinos can rise up to the challenge of climate change.

RAP Spearheads 2009 Annual Reading Convention
School administrators, department heads, reading program coordinators, and professors from all over the Philippines participated in the Reading Association of the Philippines (RAP) Annual Summer Conference held last April 24 – 25, 2009 at St. Paul University Auditorium, St. Paul University in Pedro Gil St., Manila.
Organized by the Reading Association of the Philippines, in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education, the conference carried the theme, “Developing Reading Comprehension Across Levels”. The event aims to bring together reading education, readership, methods and strategies in teaching reading practitioners from various parts of the country, to share their research and best practices on reading assessment and intervention.
During the annual convention, several plenary sessions on literacy, developmental reading, and literacy and technology were conducted by professors from different universities in the Philippines. This year’s featured speaker was Dr. Maryann Manning, a board member of the International Reading Association, who explained about early literacy and Research on Reading Teacher Development.
On the other hand, Dr. Rosemary Green from Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao and Dr. Dianne Dekker from Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) discussed about Multilingual Literacy. Representatives from the Philippine Board on Books for Young People, Reach out and Read – Philippines, and Read or Die Book Club informed the participant about their literary advocacies. Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Dr. Fortunato De la Peña and DepEd Assistant Secretary Jesus Mateo jointly shared their knowledge on Literacy and Technology.
UP Centennial Artists Held “Festival” Exhibit
The distinguished University of the Philippines (UP) Centennial Artists group held a painting exhibition at the Trade Hall of the Gateway Mall at the Araneta Center in Quezon City last April 23 to June 5, 2009.
Entitled “Festival”, the exhibit had for its theme the various festivities all over the country, given the Filipinos’ innate love for celebrations, and showcased the works of several outstanding UP alumni painters.
“Festival” is their first exhibition 2009 and fourth in a series since the UP Centennial Artists were formed as a group in June 2008, during the year-long celebration of the University of the Philippines’ one hundredth year anniversary. The series began with highly successful “100 Years/100 Nudes” in August, followed by a multi-themed exhibit in November, and climaxed with a “Mother and Child” exhibition last December 18, 2008 at the Trade Hall of the Gateway Mall.
The continuing series is organized by UP Centennial Artist Romy Carlos as a project of the UP Alumni Association in cooperation with fellow-UP alumnus, Mr. Jorge Araneta, proprietor of the Araneta Center in Quezon City.

Philippine dance troupes, together with international dance groups, celebrated the International Dance Day with seminars, workshops, and cultural presentations during the Dance Xchange: 1st Philippine International Dance Workshop and Festival held last April 28 – May 1, 2009 in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
Organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the annual national dance congress aims to provide a venue for interaction and to facilitate learning among dancers, directors, choreographers as well as t tourism and cultural officers. The event is designed to provide new ideas and inspiration to encourage creativity of dance educators, directors, and choreographers.
Dance Xchange is also intended to showcase the unique dances of each country to promote cultural understanding and to strengthen network among dance organizations and diplomatic relations of the participating countries.
International delegations included Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Dance Troupe, the Dance Academy of Kuching Malaysia, Persadaku Seni Dancers of Singapore, Spanish Dance Troupe, Chinese Dance Company, Beijing Dance Academy, Japanese Dancers, Aswara Dancers of Malaysia, Korea, and Macau Dancers.
