UP, UST Dominated Hao Chin Table Tennis Championship

University of the Philippines (UP) and University of Santo Tomas (UST) dominated their respective divisions during the 2009 Vincente Hao Chin Sr. Memorial Cup 8th National Inter-Scholastic Table Tennis Championship and International Invitationals held last October 17 – 21 at the Ateneo Table Tennis Training Center in Ateneo de Manila University in Katipunan, Quezon City.

Organized by AdMU and sanctioned by the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines (TATAP), the event gathered the brightest players from schools and universities nationwide and competed in fourteen tournament events. These were men’s and women’s school team (college), boy’s and girl’s school team (high school and elementary), men’s and women’s non-rank event, boy’s and girl’s singles event (high school and elementary), men’s and women’s open singles.

UP defeated University of Perpetual Help in a 3-0 sweep while UST claimed victory against last year’s overall winner, St. Martin High Montessori in a 3-2 triumph in the men’s and women’s division.

In other championship matches, Tapia Elementary School outplayed Mabatang Elementary School, 3-0, for the boy’s title while Joyful Angel School defeated Tapia Elementary School, 3-0, for the girl’s crown.

The First Carranz Outdoor National Youth Table Tennis Games

Aiming to discover fresh new talent from all over the country, as well as to foster the values of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and fair play, the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines (TATAP) organized the first ever Carranz Outdoor National Youth Table Tennis Games, slated last May 20–24 in Bacolod City.

The four-day play-offs was intended as a national selection tournament to determine the national junior table tennis pool members for the Visayas region The event was spearheaded by Mr. Alvin Carranza, chairman of the TATAP and also the head of the National Grassroots and Youth Development Program, and held in the University of St. La Salle Bacolod and the activity center in SM City Bacolod.

The games were also co-organized by the Lopues’ Table Tennis Association (LOPTTA) and conducted eight main events—girls’ and boys’ teams 13 and under; girls’ and boys’ teams 17 and under; girls’ and boys’ singles 13 and under; and girls’ and boys’ singles 17 and under. The participants in the eight main events came only from the Visayas region, while players from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao were allowed to compete in other four events—men singles non-rank, women singles non-rank, men’s team and singles in the Liha event.
