PMAP Hosts Connecting Philippine HR to the World: A Fusion of HR Best Practices

Human resources, better known as HR, are an integral part of a company. They provide options for the personal growth of employees and develop ways in order to encourage and develop a harmonious relationship within the organization. In order to do these tasks effectively, HR practitioners must keep abreast of the latest trends and best practices not only locally but globally.

Keeping track with the globalization of many aspects of business, the People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) organized a special learning event entitled “Connecting Philippine HR to the World: A Fusion of HR Best Practices” at the SMX Convention Center at Pasay City.

Held last April 23, the conference featured six of topnotch HR practitioners to discuss specific topics: Mr. Ernesto G. Espinosa, president of the World Federation of People Management Associations (WFPMA) discussed “Global Leadership Development and Challenges.” Mr. Pieter Haen, president of the European Association of People Management was the speaker for “Creating People Advantage in Times of Crisis and Beyond.” African Federation of Personnel Management Associations president Mr. Tiisetso Tsukudu tackled “HR in the Changed Economy.” Vice President of the International Society of Human Resource Management Mr. Brian Giade talked about “The Future of HR: What’s Next for the Profession?” Mr. Horacio Quiros, who is the secretary/treasurer of the WFPMA and president of the Federacion Interamericana de Asociaciones de Gesiton Humana was tasked to talk about “Diversity as a Competitive Advantage.” Finally, Mr. Peter Wilson of the Asia Pacific Federation of Human Resources Management talked about “Risk Management from an HR Perspective.”

3rd Philippine Life Insurance Congress

PMAP Staged 46th Annual Conference

The 46^th People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) Annual Conference, the biggest gathering of some of the best minds and the emerging thought leaders in people management, was held last September 23 to 25, 2009 at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila in Pasay City.

The annual event is designed to tap into the unique facets of our culture and leverage on identified nuances in order to equip People Managers with the knowledge and systems to effectively engage the Filipino workforce. The event ran on four parallel tracks, each highlighting the unique insights and collective experiences of the Filipino people.

Mr. Manuel Pangilinan, Chairman of the Philippine Long Distance Corporation (PLDT) delivered the keynote address for the three-day conference. In his speech, Chairman Pangilinan identified five variables that can be potentially transformative of the country’s economic future. These include investing in businesses which offer unique to the country’s locational or resource advantages such as tourism and mining; those that are by-products of the skills exodus such as medical tourism and the retirement businesses; those that are linked to information and communications technology such as the outsourcing business; investing in infrastructure such as power plants, toll roads, seaports, and airports to lower the cost of domestic production, provide incentives for investors to locate domestically, and promote home employment; and investing in education.

The first day carried the theme, “Bayan: Framing the Context”. Mr. Oscar Sanez, Chief Executive Officer of Business Processing Association of the Philippines; Mr. Hans Leo Cacdac, Deputy Administrator of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration; and Mr. Gerard Plana, Executive Director of PMAP jointly discussed about the critical issues and challenges in managing and developing the Philippine human capital.

The second day of the conference was divided into two specialized sessions. The morning session, dubbed “Bayani: Defining the Leadership Challenge” examined the current leadership issues in relation to organizations operating in the Philippines.

The afternoon session was titled “Anihan: Mapping Practices and Point of Views” where participants attended satellite conferences focused on talent management, performance management, industrial relations, training and development, leadership, and people management in SMEs.

The last day, “Ani: New Frameworks and Prescriptions” proposed alternative perspective on People Management. During the event, notable personalities identified and presented the results and point of views derived from the satellite conferences.

The event was concluded with PMAP giving the Employer of the Year Awards, People Manager of the Year, and People Program of the Year awards.

AASHPI holds 10th Nat’l Convention

With the theme “HR Proactive Strategies During Challenging Times,” the Asian Association of School Human Resource Management and Development Practitioners Inc. (AASHPI) made their 10th AASHPI National Convention, last August 26 - 28, 2009 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City, a resounding success.

A total of 153 delegates who were mainly school owners, administrators, officers, and also non-academe lawyers and human resource practitioners, attended the convention and also participated in the selection of nominees for the ASSHPI Board of Directors (National) 2010 -2011.

Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama delivered the event’s keynote address on the theme “Driving Change and Sustaining Peak Performance Through an Energized Human Resource.” Eight other distinguished speakers who are experts in their respective fields, on the other hand, talked about the latest HR Trends, legal developments, and the secrets of efficient and effective human resource handling.

A guided tour of selected scenic spots of Cebu and the privilege of availing the free one year membership fee were also made up for grabs on the said event.
