1st Lapus Chess fest slated

The National Chess Academy (NCA), in cooperation with the Department of Education and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines launched the 1st Secretary Jesli Lapus Cup National Students age group chess championship.

The event is consist of four legs including the National Capital Region, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao which was slated last April 19 to 21, and still ongoing, at the Pasay City Sports Complex.

The age group is open to all school-ID bearing students and is divided into 2 divisions—the boys and the girls division. Each category is composed of three events: Under 12, Under 16, and Under 20.

NCA is a privately run chess skills training and development institution. This year’s objective of the tournament is for the NCA to contribute to the chess activities, which the Department of Education mandated to introduce and propagate in all private and public schools in the country.

The champion will receive P3, 000.00 cash plus trophy and gold medal, while the second and third placers will receive P2, 000.00 and 1,000.00 plus medals.

Tagaytay and Palawan Heavily Favored in 2010 Inter-Province Chess Tilt

The 2010 Inter-Provincial Chess Team Championships challenged the country’s top chess teams to prove their worth last April 10–15 at the Cabagnot Cultural and Training Center in Old Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan.

Led by Grandmaster Darwin Laylo, the Tagaytay Team went head to head with over 30 other teams, including the Palawan Team, helmed by GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr.

Other respected names in the roster of players are GM John Paul Gomez of LWUA-A, DAR-Lanao del Sur’s Fide Master Roderick Nava, Makati City’s own FM David Elorta, Alcon John Datu of LWUA-B, FM Emmanuel Senador of Laguna, Bicol’s National Master Edmundo Gatus, NM Cesar Mariano of Iloilo, NM Rolando Andador of Bacolod, La Paz-Iloilo NM Rodrigo Atotubo, NM Francis Jocson of Capiz, NM Levi Mercado from Misamis Oriental, Boracay A’s International Master Ildefonso Datu, NM Alfred Akaling of Aklan Junior, and IM Oliver Barbosa from Rizal.

Governor Carlito S. Marquez of Aklan and National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Mr. Prospero “Butch” Pichay led the opening ceremonies of the tournament.



NCFP Secretary General and Tagaytay Mayor Bambol Tolentino enumerated the rules, and reiterated that each team is allowed to field four regular players and one alternate, with only one titled player (GM, IM, FM, or NM) in the roster.

The nine-round Swiss system tourney used the match point system with a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment to finish the game.

Trophies and cash prizes were given to the winner, with the champion bagging P100,000 plus trophy and gold medals. The runner-up received P70,000 plus trophy and silver medals, the third placer got P50,000 plus trophy and bronze medals, and the fourth placer and the fifth placer received P30,000 and P20,000, respectively..

Trophies and cash prizes were also awarded to the sixth to tenth placers as follows: P10,000 (6th); P9,000 (7th); P8,000 (8th); P7,000 (9th); and P6,000 (10th). Medals and a cash gift of P2,000 were also be given to the top individual performers from boards one to five.

2010 Hair Asia Event

The 20th National Open Championship for Hair and Makeup launched last March 9, at the World Trade Center, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City. It is one of Hair Asia’s annual competitions anticipated by salon professionals all over the country, which was also supported by the Unilever Philippines.

Dancers Show Flair in DanceSport National Tilt

The DanceSport Council of the Philippines Inc. (DSCP)launched the DSCP National Championships in conjunction with its 13th anniversary celebration. The competition was held last Nov. 29, with almost 400 dancers competing for the top spot.

Also geared toward finding the best candidates for the national pool of competitive dancers, DSCP Becky Garcia said that this competition is a way to keep the Philippine dancers visible on the international scene and also to develop of the skills of the country’s representatives in future dance tilts. The event was originally scheduled to be held at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last Oct. 10, but was rescheduled to the Nov. 29 launch because of Typhoon Ondoy. The dance competition was held at the Rizal Ballroom of the Makati Shangri-La Hotel.

Serving as adjudicators in the competition are Mr. Jeff Elworthy (Australia), Ms. Hermien Rachmat (Indonesia), Mr. Marcel Keijzer (Netherlands), Mr. Victor Buenavida (Spain), Mr. Paul Harris (United Kingdom), Mr. Michael Lim (Singapore), and Mr. Gheorghe Raducan (Romania), licensed adjudicators from the International Dance Sport Federation (IDSF).

The dance championships had a total of 27 divisions in the Standard and Latin categories. 34th National Duckpin Kegfest

The 34th National Invitational Open Duckpin Bowling Championships showcased big cash prizes at the Marketplace Bowling Center in Mandaluyong City last November 27 to December 6, 2009.

Philippine Duckpin Bowling Council (PHIDBC) President of Organizing Inez G. Magbual stressed that the men’s and ladies’ team champions bagged Php. 35,000 and Php. 30,000. The second-placers, on the other hand, received Php 20,000 each for the men’s and ladies’ singles champions (ABC) , Php 9,000 each for the runner-ups and Php 7,000 each for the third-placers. Moreover, the men’s and ladies’ high team single scores received Php 1,000 each and Php 500 each for the individual high single, top single and hi-pinning scores.

Prizes for the mixed-doubles event, however, were based on the number of participants that joined in the competition.

Then Representative, now Senator, Bongbong Marcos of Ilocos Norte, attended the competition to grace the association’s traditional Christmas party on December 3.

ARPI on its National Encounter

Arnis Philippines (ARPI) held the Annual Arnis National Encounter last November 27 to 29, 2009 in two different venues.

The eliminations in anyo (form) and full contact sizzle was held in the first two days at the Philsposrt Multi-Purpose Arena (formerly ULTRA), while the championships unfold on the last day at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.

Overall winners for all categories are as follows: Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (1st) with 8 gold, 7 silvers, and 2 bronze medals; Philippine Air Force Arnis Team (2nd) with 6 gold, 6 silvers, and 5 bronze medals; and Baguio Arnis Team (3rd) with 5 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze.

ARPI President Raymond Velayo confirmed the participation of around 500 arnisadores from different areas of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Moreover, Velayo stated that the winners for this competition will represent the country in forthcoming Arnis International Encounter in Manila, and other international meets in 2010.

‘Iceman’ won World 10-Ball Championship

There can be no doubt as to who the best player in the world is now. Mika ‘The Iceman’ Immonen of Finland won the World Ten Ball Championship held from November 25 – 30, 2009 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

The event was held weeks after winning his second consecutive US Open and the Challenge of Champions. These wins push him over the $200,000 mark for the year and cement his place firmly in pool history.

The New York-based Immonen entered the final day as one of four players left out of the 128 who started the week. His first victim for the day was Antonio Lining of the Philippines whom he beat 9-7. Just after this win the other semi-final between Lee Van Corteza of the Philippines and David Alcaide of Spain ended with Corteza earning the right to face Immonen 9-7.

In a match that featured arguably the two best players of the week, Immonen started out slow, with Corteza taking a quick 2-0 lead. Immonen calmly came right back and tied the match at 2-2. But from there Immonen found his game and slowly pulled away to take the title 11-6 in a convincing victory.

Defying the Trends and Raising the Bar for Badminton in the ’09 Badminton Open

Over the past five years, the Philippine National Open Badminton Championships has aimed to raise the standards and incorporate changes to change the playing field to cater to more age groups. Now in their sixth year, the annual event has produced several badminton icons, opened interest for badminton for first-timers and enthusiasts alike, and strengthened marketing efforts to continually promote the sport.

The event spanned across ten days (Oct. 16–25) at the Yonex Philippines Badminton Club, Liberty Center, Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City. Individual participants competed via single elimination, while the doubles and team participants (corporate and collegiate) battled in a round robin competition. Players competed for cash prizes from Php1,500.00 for Juniors 8 and below to Php20,000.00 for the corporate and open categories.

Philippine Yoga Asana Championship 2009

The 2nd Philippine Yoga Asana Championships (PYAC) was held at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, 4/F RCBC Plaza, Makati last October 25, 2009.

The goal of the event was to bring yoga to the national consciousness by making more people aware of all the benefits — physical, mental, emotional — that can come from practicing yoga. At the same time, it also highlighted the possibility that “competition” can also take the form where all the competitors are cheering for one another and urging each other to reach their potential and go beyond.

Participants who joined the competition were required to complete 2 registration forms from the PYAC website, the Entry Form and the Waiver & Release of Liability Form.

Adhering to the rules and regulations set out by the organizing committee of the International Yoga Asana Championship, participants were also required to furnish a photo ID, proof of age and proof of residency together with the 2 forms. The duly completed and signed registration documents were then submitted to the Bikram Yoga Manila Office thru Tristan Choa, PYAC Chairman.

The Adult Division championship, which was divided into men and women categories, was open to all individuals 18 years and older. There was also a Youth Division category for younger participants. However, there were no separate categories for yoga teachers and students.

Foreigners using tourist visas were not eligible to compete. Other restrictions were: female contestants must not be pregnant, no contestant can participate as a judge at any regional championship and stimulating drugs or alcoholic beverages must not be used before or during the championship. The Committee reserved the full right to suspend a competitor at any time.

Participants were given 3 minutes to perform a set of required poses (“asana”), plus 2 more advanced poses. For this year, the five required asanas were:

1. Dandayamana Janusirasana (Standing-Head-to-Knee)
2. Dandayamana Dhanurasana (Standing Bow Pulling Pose)
3. Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)
4. Sasangasana (Rabbit Pose)
5. Pashcimottanasana (Stretching Pose)

Using standardized judging criteria, the competitors were given scores based on balance, strength, poise, stability, flexibility, gracefulness and appropriate use of the time to finish the pose as they performed their routine.

Optional postures were judged on the degree of difficulty and performance. Points were deducted for imbalance and/or instability. Postures in performances exceeding 3 minutes were considered incomplete and disqualified.

First and second place winners in the championship were eligible to compete at the Annual International Yoga Asana Championship Finals in Los Angeles, CA. The third place finisher was designated as an alternate competitor.

For the audience who watched the competition proper, tickets were sold for Php 300 at Bikram Yoga Manila and at the event entrance.

The event was for the benefit of A Child’s DREAM Foundation, Baguio City’s first pediatric rehabilitative center for special children. Children from Pampanga to Kalinga Apayao and Abra with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, autism or Down syndrome come to the place for treatment.

Team Philippines Dominated Asian Supercross round 3

Kenneth San Andres and JC Rellosa led the Team Philippines as they cracked against other international riders in the 2009 FIM Asian Supercross Championships held last September 26 to 27, 2009 at Speedworld Circuit, located in SM City Bicutan.

Representatives from Australia, Russia, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Iran compete in 65cc level, 9 to 12 years old; 85cc Junior, 12 to 15 years old; and MX 2 Pro categories while other national divisions were also contested. Moreover, the trophies for top three places and cash prizes were awarded during the said event.

Top Scrabble Players Gather in Baguio for Centennial World Builders Tilt

Twelve years after the Philippines hosted the first-ever international scrabble championships, the Centennial Word Builders Tournament kicked off at the Baguio Country Club last Sept. 17–20.

The first international tournament held in the country was in the Sulu Hotel in 1997, where American Sam Kantimathi won the title.

With a final list of 34 registered participants from the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, and Saudi Arabia, the word experts went through 33 rounds of match ups, testing their vocabulary and tactics in word placement across the board. Said Huub Luyk, Baguio Benguet Word Builders Cup president, of the Centennial Tournament, “This is the most ambitious undertaking yet.”

Competitors included man-to-beat Nigel Richards, defending World Scrabble Championship and National Scrabble Championship (North America) titlist, and Chris May from New South Wales, who is Australia’s fifth ranked player. Others in the roster included Marlon Prudencio (a Filipino now based in Singapore), Odette Rio (Philippines, National Scrabble Champion in 2004), and Pakorn Nemitrmansuk and Taewan Suththasin of Thailand.

Top players from Malaysia include Vannitha Balasingam and Yao Kian Hung; Singapore had Tony Sim; Saudi Arabia had lone competitor Ricardo Gonzalez.

The $7,000 event was backed by Axa Philippines, Smart, Baguio Mayor Reinaldo Bautista, Baguio Rep. Mauricio Domogan, Total, and Baguio Centennial Commission.

After four days of tile shuffling, Philippines’ Theodore Martus bagged the crown and took home the $4,000.00 prize, scoring a total of 14,721 points, a narrow five point lead over Pakorn Nemitrmansuk, who competed in the 2007 Panagbenga Cup. Vannitha Balasingam of Malaysia clinched the third place. Rounding up the top five were favorites Nigel Richards and Chris May.

Whizzing Across Subic in the 2009 PTCC

The Philippine Touring Car Championship (PTCC), under the banner of the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP), held its 2009 series at the Subic International Raceway.

Racing enthusiasts kicked off the first leg last July 25 and 26. The second leg raced last Aug. 29 and 30, the third leg on Sept. 19 and 20, and the fourth and final leg last Oct. 24 and 25.

The AAP held the awarding of the winners of the 2009 PTCC in conjunction with the celebration of the 15th Annual Motor Sports Awards concluded just last Feb. 26 at the Grove, Rockwell. The categories and winners are as follows: Super A: Dennis Uy; Class A: Don Thomas Pastor; Class B: John Camus; Class C: Juny Binamira; and Novice: Manger Calderon.
