Nomination Open for Dr. Jose P. Rizal Awards for Excellence

The Manila Times, through the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Awards for Excellence, seeks to recognize and honor outstanding Chinese-Filipinos who have excelled in various fields of discipline and made great contributions to the Filipino society.

It is for this reason that The Manila Times decided to institutionalize an annual system of recognition of distinguished Chinese-Filipinos. Now in its fifth year, the Tsinoy Awards continue to celebrate the best in the Tsinoy community which has become a pillar of the society.

Nomination for the Awards shall be open to all Filipino citizen of Chinese descent, have received Chinese education, at the minimum, should be able to understand Chinese language, and have observed/practiced or still observes or practices some Chinese tradition

The nominee must be engaged in the following fields of endeavor: Art, Literature and Culture, Business and Entrepreneurship, Community Service, Education, Journalism, Management and Finance, Medicine, Public Service, Science and Technology, Sports and professionals. He or she shall have demonstrated outstanding leadership in his field of endeavor and made outstanding contribution to mainstream society.

Any individual, private or public entity or organization may submit nominations. Nomination forms may be obtained at www.manilatimes.net. Forms must be submitted or mailed to The Manila Times, 371 A. Bonifacio Drive, Port Area, Manila.

Deadline for the submission of entries is on April 16, 2010.

Green & White to CJA: Another History Published

With its legacy of recognizing Lasallians’ potentials in journalism, Green and White once more hosted, on its 86th year, the 21st Campus Journalism Awards last November 23, 2009.

The theme that was followed by the delegates was “Restoring the Pride Being a Filipino Through Journalism”. The delegates were composed of undergraduate Lasallian journalists that would continuously focus on the development of journalism grounded on accountable public service as guided by the Lasallian values of religio, mores, and cultura.

Participants on the event could join three (3) events maximum. There were eight (8) categories – seven (7) on-the-spot categories and one (1) submitted entry. The following categories had English & Filipino divisions: Editorial Writing, Feature Writing, News Reporting, News Writing, and Sports Writing. Contestants should use Filipino when joining the Filipino division and English when joining the English division.

Campus Journalism Strengthen at Inkblots 2009

Campus journalists, editors, advisers, and journalism educators from all over the country took part in Inkblots 2009: the 11th University of Sto. Tomas (UST) National Campus Journalism Fellowship held last October 21 to 23 at the UST Thomas Aquinas Research Complex in España, Manila.

Organized by The Varsitarian, the 81-year-old official student publication of the University of Santo Tomas, the event aims to promote press excellence and foster camaraderie among campus journalists all over the country. Since its conception in 1998, it has gathered several respected journalists in the country to talk about compelling issues faced by journalists today

Invited resource speakers for this year included GMA-7 News Reporter Cesar Apolinario, Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Conrado de Quiros, Tempo entertainment editor Nestor Cuartero, and University of the Philippines-Diliman Vice-President for Public Affairs Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo, among others.

Like the previous Inkblots, this year’s fellowship consisted of seminars on news writing, sports writing, investigative reporting, features writing, culture and lifestyle writing, opinion or column writing, and parallel sessions on writing for broadcast, and cartooning and lay-outing.

Young Journalists Met Veterans at Inkblots 2008

Campus journalists, editors, advisers, and journalism educators from all over the country filled the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Thomas Aquinas Research Complex for the Inkblots 2008: the 10^th UST National Journalism Fellowship held last October 20 to 22, 2008.

Organized by The Varsitarian, the Official Student Publication of UST and oldest Catholic campus paper in the country, Inkblots 2008 aims to mold aspiring writers through a series of journalism seminars and workshops from the country’s veteran journalists. Since 1998, the three-day workshop has integrated lectures on news, features, sports, opinion writing, book reviews, Catholic journalism, investigative journalism, broadcast journalism, cartooning, and campus paper management.

This year, the event gathered several respected journalists in the country which include Ces Drilon, host for ABS-CBN’s Evening News Program Bandila; Romeo Gacad, Agence France-Presse (AFP) chief photographer, and Pulitzer Prize nominee; Michael Coroza, PinoyPoets consultant and Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards recipient ; Sandra Aguinaldo, host for GMA-7’s I-Witness; and Arlyn Dela Cruz, Net-25 reporter.

The roster also included Nestor Cuartero, Philippine Panorama writer and Tempo entertainment editor; Vergel Santos, Chairman of Editorial Board of Business World; Felipe Salvoza III, Business World sub-editor; Quinito Henson, sports commentator and The Philippine Star columnist; Manuel ‘Manix’ Abrera, comic strip artist for Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI); Volt Contreras, PDI reporter and Catholic Mass Media Awards recipient for Best Investigative Report; Ruel de Vera, Associate Editor for the Sunday Inquirer Magazine; John Nery and Conrado de Quiros, PDI columnists; and Alice Colet-Villadolid, former New York Times correspondent.

To conclude the event, and mark the 10^th anniversary of Inkblots, current Varsitarian editor-in-chief Anthony Divinagracia and adviser Lito Zulueta blew 10 candles on the Inkblots ‘birthday’ cake. Fireworks at the UST Football Field lit up the night. And finally, local rock bands 6cyclemind, Urbandub, and Hale performed at the UST Quadricentennial Square.
