Local Martial Arts Underscored at National Yaw-Yan Sports Championship

The practice of Filipino martial art Yaw-Yan (Sayaw ng Kamatayan or Dance of Death) was underscored during the First National Yaw-Yan Sports Championship last August 22 and 23, 2009 at the Barangay Greater Fairview Covered Court in Fairview, Quezon City.

Jointly organized by Yaw-Yan Sports Philippines in cooperation with International Federation of Yaw-Yan Sports, the event aims to promote and propagate Yaw-Yan in an amateur level as Yaw-Yan Sports, unite and promote camaraderie among Yaw-Yan practitioner, and to encourage youth to be interested in sports such as Yaw-Yan and keep them away from vices.

No less than Yaw-Yan founder and Grand Master Napoleon “Nap” Fernandez graced the first amateur competition which he established in 1972. 36 teams all over Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao took part in the martial arts competition. The event was divided in to two events: Yaw-Yan Anyo and Yaw-Yan Contact Sparring. Yaw-Yan Anyo was a form or dance competition involving display of pure Yaw-Yan and Traditional Yaw-Yan techniques. Like in any contact sports, the Yaw-Yan Contact Sparring was classified under different weight divisions.

The National Yaw-Yan Sports Championship 2009 is sponsored by Octagon Pro, Pocari Sweat, Cake2Go, RPN 9, The Manila Times, and Radyo ng Bayan DZRB 738 kHz AM.
