7th ARMM Biz Congress to Maximize Investment

The 7th Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Business Congress was held on August 5-6 in the Islamic City of Marawi. This focused on the development of seaweed, fruit and abaca industries considered as the area’s top dollar earners. President of the ARMM Business Council (ABC) spearheaded the event under the oversight of the Mindanao Economic Development Council, as a timely opportunity to show potential investors that business is alive and well in the region, said Datu Baron Bandilla.

Themed "Maximizing Investment Gains to Propel Economic Development in ARMM," the Congress serves as a door for investment and business opportunities to local and foreign industries amidst the global economic recession. Plenary sessions on the impact of the global financial crisis and on how to maximize ARMM’s resources in fisheries, aquaculture and farm production were featured in the 2009 congress.

Activities such as that would help the business sector to become more competitive and responsive to the demands of local and foreign markets as perceived by Mangondaya Solaiman, president of the Maranaw Chamber of Commerce and Industry, host chamber and co-organizer of the congress.

On the other hand, local entrepreneurs and potential investors, which included foreign delegates from the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area and the Middle East, conducted business-matching sessions in between of other activities. Participants also presented recommendations to the ARMM regional government on how to make it easier and to do business in the region and to attract more investment.

The Autonomous Muslim region covers the province of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Basilan and Tawi-Tawi.
