The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has continually been delivering and developing programs that chiefly target the poorest communities in the country over the years, including the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino cash transfer program.
Although many of the functions of the department have devolved since the early 1990’s, the DSWD has continued to extend support and assistance to local government units that are now responsible for delivering basic social welfare and development programs.
In keeping with its prime responsibility of promoting and protecting social welfare rights and abd social development, the DSWD, together with the Association of Local Social Welfare and Development Officers of the Philippines Inc., held the 13th National Social Welfare and Development Forum at the Manila Hotel last Aug. 27, carried by the theme “Relevant and Responsive Social Welfare and Development Practice in the Third Millennium through Networking, Partnership, and Social Advocacy” and the sub-theme “Social Welfare Providers: Rights, Opportunities, and Challenges.”
Experts presented updates in the Republic Act 9433, the Magna Carta for Social Workers, and the implications of this law on the privileges and responsibilities of social workers. Various awards were also presented to exemplary social welfare workers, including Outstanding Day Care Worker, Outstanding Local Social and welfare Development Officers, and Outstanding Local Chief Executives from the municipal to provincial levels.
