Triathletes From Around the World Take on Ironman 70.3 Philippines

The most prestigious triathlon series in the world will hit Philippine shores as the country stages the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines on August 23, 2009 at the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC) in Pili, Camarines Sur.

According to Mr. Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, Chairman of the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines, the event aims to support of the government’s thrust to make the Philippines a destination of choice for “sports tourism”, help develop the growth of triathlon in the country, and create a world-class triathlon event on local soil.

“While the sport is relatively small here, there has been significant growth in the past couple of years. As more and more people seek a healthier lifestyle, triathlon is well positioned to attract many new participants.” added Uytengsu.

The triathlon will cover 1.2 miles (1.9 km) of swimming, 56 miles (90 km) of biking and 13.1 miles (21.1 km) of running which adds up to 70.3 miles of total racing.

But since the Ironman 70.3 could be too challenging for many participants, organizers, World Triathlon Commission and Sunrise Events, Inc., have decided to offer a relay category during the event wherein three individuals can team up to complete the swim, bike and run. Within the relay category there are different classes: men, women, mixed, corporate and collegiate.

The Ironman 70.3 Philippines is sponsored by Cobra Energy Drink , Globe Telecom, Department of Tourism, Philippine Airlines, Air Philippines, Alaska Milk Corporation, Audi, Oakley, Timex, New Balance, SKI Construction, Gatorade, and the following media partners: ABS-CBN Publishing, The Philippine Star, C/S 9, and Solar Sports.
