Cacao on its first summit

The Cocoa Foundation of the Philippines (Cocoaphil) and ACDI/VOCA hosted the Philippine Cacao Summit at the SM Megatrade Hall Conference Room B of the SM Megamall last August 28, 2009.

US Ambassador to the Philippines, Ms. Kristie Kenny cut the ceremonial ribbon of the exhibit and gave the keynote address at the opening ceremony. Other guests were Dr. Rene Espino, Philippines Department of Agriculture division of High Value Commercial Crops, Mr. David Wolf, USDA, Mr. Peter Van Grinsven, MARS Inc. and Mr. Edward David, CocoaPhil.

Cocoaphil President Edward David noted that the summit tackled the promotion of SUCCESS Alliance II program, the evaluation of the sultant's report, and plan for the cocoa sector growth and investment forum panel. Moreover, Ambassador Kenney emphasized the importance of the cocoa value chain development to uplift the economic conditions of the cacao smallholders, and Dr. Espino announced the Philippine cocoa bean standards and its acceptance in the world trade and emphasized cacao as a recognized High Value Commercial Crop in Philippine agriculture.

Cocoaphil (952-6397) is an umbrella organization promoting an integrated and sustained development of the local cocoa industry.
