The Ninth Annual Pacific Region Investment Conference

Aiming to provide meaningful educational forums that discuss the most current and fundamental roles of asset managers, the Asia Pacific Association for Fiduciary Studies (APAFS) held the Ninth Annual Pacific Region Investment Conference (PRIC) at the Renaissance Makati Hotel last Oct. 8 and 9.

Focusing on regional specific issues and needs, the conference also provided members with current developments about the relevant tools needed to measure the performance of investment managers, investment consultants, and other service providers. The annual confab has also been considered as a regional resource for best practices and industry developments. The PRIC has also provided valuable networking opportunities with other fiduciaries from the region.

Distinguished speakers from all over the world discussed several topics across two days. The first day saw to Mr. Stephen Weiss from Income Research & Management as he discussed the “Update of 2008 Presentation of Global Crisis;” Mr. Jack Lin, co-chief executive officer of Janus Capital International talked about “The Investment Conundrum: Active, Passive, and Other Investment Solutions;” Sen. Manuel Villar tackled “Real Estate Investments Overview;" Mr. John J. Rice of Coughlin Stoia Geller Rudman & Robins, meanwhile, talked about “Corporate Governance Issues Facing Investment Fiduciaries” over lunch of the first day. Mr. Louis Bolanger of Louis Bolanger Now was assigned to discuss “Protection Against the Risk of a Systematic Financial Breakdown” and keynote speaker Dr. Mark Mobius handled the discussion about “Emerging Markets Investing and Outlook” and had a panel Q & A segment afterward.

The second day had another round of sessions, this time from Mr. Frank Crawford from the United States Department of Agriculture, who discussed about the “Performeter: Measuring a Government’s Financial Health and Success;” Mr. Stephen Weiss went back to the podium for “Introduction to Bonds;” Mr. Mark J. Heath of Metropolitan West Capital Management talked about the “Basics of Equity Securities;” and Mr. David C. John, president of the ASC Trust Company, the featured luncheon speaker for the second day, spoke about the “Evolution of Retirement Plans.”

Two Q & A portions were also featured on the second day, with the following topics: “Outlook for the Global Fixed Income Markets” and “Outlook for Equity Markets.”
