Iloilo-Guimaras Investment Forum

The Iloilo Economic Development Foundation, Inc. (ILEDF)hosted the Iloilo-Guimaras Investment Forum last September 4, 2009 at the Ballroom of the Hotel Intercontinental Manila in Makati City.

The forum presented investment opportunities and prospects in the areas of information technology and communication, tourism and agribusiness in Iloilo City, and in the provinces of Iloilo and Guimaras.

The half-day forum opened with a commercial exhibit at 8 a.m., followed by welcome remarks from ILEDF officials Dr. Alfonso A. Uy, chairman, and Rex Drilon, president. Messages were also delivered by Hon. Jerry P. Trenas, Mayor of Iloilo City, Hon. Niel D. Tupas, Sr., Governor of Iloilo Province; and Hon. Felipe Hilan A. Nava, Governor of Guimaras.

The keynote address was delivered by Ramon del Rosario Jr., new chairman of the University of Iloilo, and president of PHINMA which recently acquired the university, demonstrating in concrete terms its belief in investing in education in Iloilo.

Other speakers who participated were Oscar R. Sanez, president, Business Processing Association of the Philippines ; Mariano A. Cordero, consultant, International Rural Development Banking; Miguel C. Garcia, president and CEO of Diversified Technology Systems, Inc.; Narzalina Z. Lim, former Secretary of Tourism, now president of Asia-Pacific Projects, Inc. Tourism and Hospitality Consultants; Elwyn R. Borromeo, general manager, Central Azucarera de San Antonio; Federico R. Lopez, President and CEO of First Gen. Corp.; and Jesus N. Alcordo, president of Global Power Business Corp., which is presently building a coal-fired power plant in Iloilo, expected to be in place by 2010, addressing the city’s unstable power supply and its high cost.

Aurelio R. Montinola III, president and CEO of Bank of the Philippine Islands, delivered the luncheon address.

Among the investment opportunities discussed during the forum were: the Kapideco (Kauturan Pison Development Corp.) Estate master planned mixed-use development currently being developed in the large area that was once salt beds and fish ponds in Brgy. Tabucan and San Rafael in Mandurriao, Plazuela de Iloilo commercial development (beside SM City Iloilo), Revitalization of Calle Real, Iloilo’s Central Business District, and improvement of Iloilo-Guimaras Ports.

The twin destinations of Iloilo and Guimaras make for an attractive investment proposition because of their development-oriented and business-friendly local governments, backed by a young and highly-educated population, a strong OFW sector, air, shipping and telecoms infrastructure already in place, a coal-fired power plant to solve their power shortage, and DPWH’s flood control project which will be completed next year. To top it all, the good mix of cultural and natural attractions makes Iloilo and Guimaras the tourists’ delight, further highlighting their preparedness for socioeconomic growth.

The organizer, ILEDF, is a non-stock, non-profit organization founded by key representatives from the local government, business community and private individuals, committed to fast track local development by promoting and marketing Iloilo as a premier investment destination.
