The event called Chefs for Education (C4E), which aimed at raising funds for scholarships to entice the “best and brightest” of the country’s high school graduates to pursue a career in teaching was carried out last September 13, 2009 at The White Space, Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City.
Hosted by the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) and The Philippine Tatler, this dinner-denim ball featured five of the country’s best chefs Margarita Forres (of Pepato and Cibo di M), Colin Mackay (People’s Palace, Sala and Sala Bistro), Vicky Rose Pacheco (the Chateau 1771 Group), Myrna Segismundo (Restaurant 9501), and Jessie Sincioco (Le Souffle) as they were assisted by 12 students who apprenticed with the master chefs during the summer, having been chosen from hotel and restaurant management and cooking programs from around the country.
With the PBEd hopes to entice moneyed young professionals and the wealthy to get involved in reforming education, tables were priced up to P100,000 for corporate sponsors as the proceeds went to PBEd’s 1,000 Teachers scholarship program.
Touted as “the social event of the year” and a “dinner of a lifetime,” it was also announced then that eventually, the C4E will become a biannual event, highlighting a facet of the problems of Philippine education. The focus of the said dinner though was the need to have more qualified teachers.
