CEAP Focuses on Leadership as Stewardship in 68th National Convention

The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP), comprised of more than a thousand educational institutions that promotes religious instruction as an essential element of Catholic education toward character formation and citizenship building, held its 68th National Convention in conjunction with its 69th anniversary celebration at the Manila Hotel last Sept. 16–18, 2009.

Inspired by the theme “Hold it in Trust: Leadership as Stewardship,” the convention was participated in by both church and political leaders, considered as stewards of the country in different but complementing capacities.

The event spanned across three days, aimed to provide an opportunity for bishops and Catholic educators to be able to discuss their role in the stewardship of the country; present important matters to strengthen the organization toward more effective service; and share trends, practices, approaches, and/or strategies for educational management

The first day of the convention opened with a Eucharistic celebration led by His Eminence Archbishop of Manila, Gaudencio Cardinal B. Rosales, followed by the ribbon cutting ceremony and a short press conference. Msgr. Gerard O. Santos, CEAP president, welcomed participants and delegates to the event.

Included in the roster of distinguished guests is the convention’s keynote speaker, Most Reverend Edward Joseph Adams, D.D., Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, who discussed the special role of Catholic schools in infusing spirituality to stewardship.

Highlighting the first day of the convention was the presentation of the Pro Deo et Patria Award to the former president Corazon Aquino. Led by Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, the Aquino family received the award in a special tribute. The first recipient of the award was the late Jaime Cardinal Sin. The tribute, directed by Sally Belosillo, will include performances from Kuh Ledesma, Jose Mari Chan, Jamie Rivera, and the Kilyawan, the La Salle Greenhills Kundirana, and the Poveda Hardcourt Dancers.

Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, president of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines, presided over the morning praise and Eucharistic celebration to start off the second day. Educational leaders gathered to discuss different strategies and learning systems that could be integrated into already existing curricula. Sixteen different topics were covered in the discussions, including youth empowerment, the latest technologies in management, promoting better learning environments, and the optimization of school resources.

A forum with senators and other national leaders was conducted on the third day, focusing on their platforms on education. The forum was moderated by ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) senior anchor Tina Monzon-Palma.

Also included in the event is a panel discussion on the regional assemblies on stewardship, product fairs and exhibits, and a CEAP business meeting.
