Outstanding Chapters, Individuals, Recognized at Philippine National Red Cross Convention

Numerous staff, volunteers, and chapters of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) were recognized during the 28th Biennial Convention last December 15-16, 2009 at the Manila Hotel.

Carrying the theme, “Modernizing the Philippine Red Cross: Meeting New Challenges”, PNRC Chairman Senator Richard Gordon said that the technological advancement of the modern age, must be directed towards their betterment and well-being and used to modernize PNRC methods of disaster response and even prevention.

The 28th Biennial National Convention served as an occasion to assess the progress of the PNRC and to conceptualize resolutions regarding the difficulties and improvements that are to be carried out by the organization.

On the first day, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, early warning systems and public health in emergencies were the topics discussed during the workshop sessions.

The second day of the convention was dedicated to discussions on how information could be harnessed for the PNRC operations, how PNRC services could be scaled up to meet increasing service demands and how services could be improved.

During the convention, incumbent PNRC chairman Senator Richard Gordon also delivered the Biennial Report, which summarized the improvements and actions carried out by the organization.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the recipients of the Aurora Aragon Quezon Medal, Silver Humanitarian Service Cross Award and Gold Humanitarian Service Cross Award will be honored.

The Service Awards are conferred on volunteers who are highly distinguished in their service and promotion of the Red Cross work. The Aurora Aragon Award is the highest national award and is bestowed to people who have records of highly distinguished service of not less than 8 years as a leader or official of a unit and a highly distinguished service in the promotion of the Red Cross work.

A total of 28 individuals received Service Cross Award while 24 volunteers and advocates of the Red Cross were given the Aurora Aragon Award. Here is the complete list of awardees:
