Representatives of the military unit of various Asian countries visited the Philippines for the 18th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Armies Rifle Meet (AARM) and the 9th ASEAN Chiefs of Armies Multilateral Meeting (ACAMM) held last December 4 – 10, 2008 at the CAMP O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac.
The AARM aims to develop and strengthen the relationship between the military personnel on all levels of the ASEAN Armies, from senior military leaders to the soldiers of the lower ranks, through rifle, pistol and carbine competitions.
Participants of the AARM came from the Indonesian National Army, Lao People's Army, Malaysian Army, Myanmar Armed Forces, Philippine Army, Royal Brunei Land Forces, Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, Singapore Army, Thailand Army, and Vietnam People's Army. These soldiers competed in five different categories, namely: Rifle, Carbine, Machine Gun, Pistol Ladies and Pistol Men. Chiefs and Deputies of the Army and Contingent Commanders had their VIP Novelty Shoot Competition during the event.
Indonesian Army was hailed as the Overall Team Champion for the Rifle, Carbine, Pistol Men and Pistol Ladies Category and the Falling Plates Champion for the Rifle, Carbine, and Machine Gun Match. Three sergeants from the Indonesian Army were awarded as Overall Individual Champion for Carbine, Pistol Men, and Pistol Ladies. The Royal Thai Army on the other hand, bagged the trophy for Overall Team Champion for Machine Gun Category while two Master Sergeants won Overall Individual Champion for Rifle and Machine Gun Category. The Singapore Army was the Falling Plates Champion for Pistol Men while the Philippine Army managed to win Falling Plates Champion for Pistol Ladies.
ACAMM, on the other hand, is intended to foster military-to-military cooperation, develop interpersonal relationships and contribute to regional dialogue and stability. The theme for this year’s Multilateral Meeting is "Ensuring Regional Peace and Stability through the Collective Strength of the ASEAN Armies.”
During the event, army representatives discussed ways to combat the transnational problem of terrorism. In addition, military heads exchanged vital information on how to combat local terrorists and ensure security among ASEAN countries. Philippine Army and supported by Shooters Arms Manufacturing (S.A.M.) Inc., Jolibee, Globe Telecom, hCoca-Cola, and Willi Hahn Enterprises.
