Daet celebrates 10th Pinyasan Festival

Conceptualized by then councilor and now municipal Mayor Tito Sarion, the 10th Pinyasan Festival, also dubbed as the most colorful festival was held from June 15 to 24 in Daet, Camarines, Norte.

The week-long festivity featured a mobile display of Marikina shoe products, a beauty pageant, a food and agro-industrial fair, a cultural night, appearances by TV personalities Kristine Hermosa and Ara Mina and Miss Tourism International Michelle Reyes, and other special events.

Sporting events included surfing exhibition and competition, marathon, beach volleyball, cycling, paraw regatta, national air rifle open competition, mountain conquests, motocross tilt, sport fishing and indigenous games.

Other activities included a four-wheel-drive competition, the dedication of the Gawad Kalinga Pinyasan Village in Barangay Bibirao, the opening of the Pinyasan-GSP camp and the Tertulla de Daet at the Pabico ancestral house by the Kiwanis Club of Daet, the Reina DaeteƱa, and the Daet Senior Citizens Federation. Other features include a basketball competition, a singing competition, an acrobatic show, ballroom dancing, the search for Ms. Daet and Ms. Pinyasan 2009, beach volleyball, a paraw-regatta competition, sand-carving contest, and other beach events at the Bagasbas Beach, a surfing site, street dancing and a parade of floats, a Mardi Gras-type parade with participants from festivals in the Bicol region and other parts of the country. The Festival’s highlight is a streetdancing parade which showcased performers in pineapple-inspired costumes that culminate on June 24 in time for the Feast of St. John the Baptist.

Situated some 300 kilometers southeast of Manila, Daet is known nationwide as a producer of the queen or “Formosa’’ variety which is among the sweetest in the world. Daet’s tourist attractions include the Bagasbas Beach surfing area, the first monument of Dr. Jose Rizal built in 1898 by the revolutionaries, ancestral houses, old Spanish-period churches, and other natural attractions in neighboring towns.
